Aerial Yoga

Aerial Yoga is a suspension yoga system, done with what practitioners call a trapeze,  sling or swing: a swath of soft fabric suspended from the ceiling, which supports your body and allows you to work against gravity.

The trapeze also helps you to get deeper into stretches and to rest in inversions, offering health benefits unique to being in traction (any treatment which lengthens and decompress the spine). This is why many people with back pain are attracted to Aerial Yoga.

But there are many benefits to this practice: ,

- Relieves Back Pain: Hanging freely allows your spine to lengthen, and eases tension in the spinal cord and hip joints.

- Increases Flexibility: The support of the trapeze helps you to move more freely, with less effort, by counteracting gravity. Suspension releases tension on the bones and muscles, increasing flexibility.

- It provides a total body workout and increases strength: Almost all body parts are made to move and stretch. Muscles are toned and redefined, and joints are regenerated and strengthened due to these movements. You will quickly notice more strength in your core and upper body especially in the arms and writs (good for opening jars!)

- Improves balance: With the support of the sling, you practice balancing postures which you might not manage on a mat

- Fights ageing and heart disease: Being upside down improves circulation and detoxifies both the blood and the lymphatic systems.

- Aids digestion: The different types of stretches and movements help improve the digestive system, thus helping with various digestion-related issues, including constipation and indigestion.

- Puts you in a good mood: The experience can be a fun, thus releasing “happy” hormones like serotonin, endorphins, oxytocin, dopamine, which boost your mood and help you feel more energetic. It also clears the mind and relieves stress due to its meditative state.

- Improves memory: Aerial yoga fortifies your neural connections, thereby, rendering better memory power. In a way, practicing aerial yoga can make you smarter!

I trained with Lucas Rockwood at Yoga Body in Aerial Yoga and I am qualified to display the logo. I offer private Aerial Yoga sessions at home in Lyme Regis. Aerial Yoga is a therapeutic tool and each practice is adapted to the needs of the student. So we would always start with an introductory session  when we will have an opportunity to talk about what attracts you to this practice, your health, your needs and your goals; I can show you a few moves on the trapeze and you can have a go.
